MILWAUKEE, Wis (WAUK) – MPD is still trying to attract existing officers with $10,000. There’s a deadline of next week for existing officers in other departments to apply for a lateral transition to the Milwaukee Police Department and be eligible for the sign-on bonus.
The job listing says the position offers job security, competitive pay and benefits, and merit-based opportunities for promotions.
The department is offering the bonus to those with one year of law enforcement experience, post-academy, and that is at least 20 years old at the time of application.
Urban Milwaukee reports that in the roughly 4 weeks of the program existing, it’s only found six of the 30 candidates being sought, with some on the City of Milwaukee Common Council not behind the bonus program.
In a recent op-ed in WisPolitics, the president of the Milwaukee Police Association, Alexander Ayala, says the city of Milwaukee is short 241 law enforcement positions, saying that “means our officers are working in an extremely dangerous environment, often with backup far away when minutes, or even seconds matter.” Ayala is pushing for a new labor agreement to be ratified.
There’s a December 22nd deadline to apply for the $10,00 sign-on bonus. There’s more about the program here.
