Milwaukee residents who need help filing their taxes can get it done for free through the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program.

Certified VITA volunteers can file state and federal tax returns for households with an income of about $69,000 or less, people who have disabilities or limited English-speaking abilities.

Appointments can fill up quickly and may require a few weeks of processing time, so check out your options before the April 15 tax filing deadline.

View VITA sites by location at the IRS Free Tax Prep Help website. Here’s a list of documents to bring as well.

AARP Tax-Aide sites

For adults age 50 and older or those who have low to moderate income, the IRS’ Tax Counseling for the Elderly, or TCE, program is another option for free tax help.

Many TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program at local senior centers and libraries. Find a site using the Tax-Aide site locator.

Here’s where you can find free AARP tax prep locations around Milwaukee.
