Over February 28 and March 1, the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings swept Steele County with scores of 3-0 and 6-2 in the first round of the USPHL playoffs.
Rapids will next host No. 3 seeded Northwest Express over March 7 and 8 and the 9th if needed with puck drop slated for 7:00 p.m.
The Riverkings and the Express split the regular season series with Northwest winning 6-4 and 5-0, while Rapids took wins with scores of 5-2, 4-1.
For the first time in ten years, the Wisconsin Rapids Wrestling team has a state champion at heavyweight.
Tanner Gormanson captured gold in the 285-pound weight class with a 10-4 victory over Makhi Rodgers of Brown Deer/Messmer/Shorewood.
Also placing for Rapids was Kailar Tritz (190) and Carter Freeman (138) as they placed third and sixth.
Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards had one place-winner, Sawyer Ostrum (132) as he placed fourth.
The Assumption Girls Basketball team secured a Regional title on Saturday, March 1 when they defeated Almond-Bancroft 62-26.
The Royals next play on Thursday, March 6, when they play Pacelli at Adams-Friendship in a Sectional Semifinal at 7:00 p.m.
The Wisconsin Rapids, Nekoosa, and Port Edwards Girls teams dropped their playoff openers as they saw their seasons come to an end.
Only two local Boys teams remain in action in the playoffs.
Assumption and Nekoosa will be playing in the Division 5 and Division 4 Regional Semifinals on Friday, March 7 with the Royals playing at Columbus Catholic and the Papermakers at Pardeeville.
Wisconsin Rapids and Port Edwards lost their playoff debuts.
Wisconsin Rapids freshman, Elsa Urban, will be competing at the WIAA Division 2 State Individual Meet on Saturday, March 8.
Urban will be competing in the Uneven Bars and Balance Beam.
