MADISON, Wis. – (WAUK) – Milwaukee County was a big winner in a recent funding approval. Gov. Tony Evers has announced the State Building Commission has approved over $103 million in projects across Wisconsin, including significant investment in Milwaukee County.

A major project getting additional funding is the completion of the Forensic Science and Protective Medicine Facility. That will house the Milwaukee Crime Lab, Milwaukee County 911 Dispatch, and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. The facility will also include the relocated Versiti Blood Research Institute. It’s set to open in May of 2026 and will be half-owned by the state.

The project, at 9400 W. Doyne Avenue in Wauwatosa, received $99.5 million in state funding in August 2022, with an additional $20 million grant from Gov. Evers in September 2022. The recent approval addresses increased costs.

Other approved projects also include the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, which is receiving $500,000 for property development. The program supports conservation efforts by providing matching funds to Friends groups and nonprofit organizations for projects at DNR properties.

The commission also approved projects for the University of Wisconsin System, including the demolition of the old chemistry building at UW-Milwaukee.
