MILWAUKEE, Wis (WAUK) — Milwaukee residents can now virtually explore a future without Interstate 794, thanks to a new augmented reality experience launched by the community group Rethink I-794.
The interactive tool, designed to build public support for converting the elevated freeway into a boulevard, is available at seven locations along E. Clybourn Street. By scanning QR codes or visiting i794.com, users can view renderings that show how downtown might change with the proposed boulevard.
The initiative aims to influence the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), which is currently reviewing options for the future of I-794. WisDOT is expected to release two design alternatives for further study this year: one that replaces the freeway with a boulevard and another that involves narrowing the roadway. Both proposals are anticipated to free up land for public use or private development.
For those unable to visit the interactive stations in person, a website offers a similar experience.
