A Duluth affordable housing complex unveiled its new multi-million dollar renovation with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday.
The renovation at the Windwood Townhomes was a year long project that cost about $18 million. Funding for the project was provided by a state organization called Minnesota Housing.
According to a Northern News Now report, the housing complex in the Duluth heights neighborhood is made up of 70 affordable units, and is targeted towards area residents who are making at or below 50 percent of the city’s median income of around $60,000. The complex had been serving families in need since the 1970’s, and was long overdue for an upgrade due to the quality of each apartment.
Some of the improvements to the complex include new windows, flooring, counter tops, and cabinets in the units, as well as a new playground and community center on the property. Officials say that the renovation will guarantee the complex will continue to serve the community for another 50 years.
City officials say maintaining the housing supply, specifically affordable housing options, has become a major focus. Earlier this month, the Duluth City Council voted to approve tax-increment financing on the housing project at the former Central High School location. When competed, that site will feature two 120 unit condo buildings and a 220 unit apartment building.
Center City Housing Corp., the organization behind the Windwood Townhomes complex, is reportedly also planning a new affordable housing complex aimed towards senior citizens living near Essentia Health called Select Apartments.
